Amethyst –– Think Baby Name

From the name of the purple semi-precious stone, which is derived from the Greek negative prefix ἀ (a) and μέθυστος (methystos) meaning "intoxicated, drunk", as it was believed to be a remedy against drunkenness.

Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz that has become one of the most popular and well-known crystals in the mineral kingdom. Amethyst gains its color from gamma irradiation and trace amounts of Iron.

This stone is given special names depending on its formation or locality, including Rwanda Amethyst and Chevron Amethyst . Specimens in both these South American countries have been found as tall as small buildings and can sell for millions of dollars!

When Amethyst is heated to more than 300-400 degrees its purple turns into a bright orange and is incorrectly sold as Citrine. Beware of purchasing brightly colored Citrine pieces from untrusted sellers!

Les Amours de Bacchus

In Greek lore, Amethyst appeared as a young virgin who was traveling to worship at the Temple of Diana. During her journey, she was approached by Bacchus, the god of wine, fertility, and agriculture. He became enraged when she declined his advance and summoned two tigers to pounce on her. At that exact moment, the goddess Diana emerged and encased Amethyst in a massive Quartz crystal for her protection. Upon seeing her encapsulated in this gleaming crystal, Bacchus denounced his actions and poured his glass of wine over Amethyst, coating the clear quartz crystal with a purple glow.
