Bithynia, Pontus & Istanbul

Bithynia (Pontus)
The name Bithynia means, "violent rushing" while the meaning of Pontus is "the sea".

Bithynia and part of Pontus, located in the northern part of Asia Minor, were combined in 64 B.C. to form a double province. The Bible, unfortunately, does not record any cities within this Roman territory.

Those from Pontus were in Jerusalem at Pentecost in 30 A.D. when God "poured out" his Spirit on 3,100+ people. Bithynia - Pontus is also the place where a Jew named Aquila, the husband of Priscilla, grew up (Acts 18:1 - 2). After the couple converted to Christianity, they became some of Apostle Paul's closest friends and greatly aided his evangelistic efforts.

God, during Paul's second missionary journey, forbids him (along with companions Silas and Timothy) from preaching in or even entering Bithynia - Pontus!

In Biblical Baby Names the meaning of the name Bithynia is: Violent precipitation. In Latin Baby Names the meaning of the name Bithynia is: Mother of Amycus.

Amycus was the son of Poseidon and a nymph. He ruled over the Bebrycians, a warlike people who lived in the region of Bithynia in northern Anatolia. A skilled and innovative boxer, Amycus forced all strangers who came to his shores to fight him.

When the Argonauts stopped at the land of the Bebrycians on their way to fetch the Golden Fleece, Amycus challenged them to a fight (as he always did) and was bested by the Argonaut Polydeuces. Amycus was later venerated in hero cult in the land he was said to have ruled.
